The Expedition Experience
Perched high on Shreenagar Hill, Tansen is a medieval Newari heritage town brimming with cobbled lanes, carved wooden balconies, and historic temples. Built in 1893 on a colossal rock cliff along the rushing Kali Gandaki River, Rani Mahal was erected by General Khadga Shumsher in eternal memory of his beloved Queen Tej Kumari. Enjoy panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs, visit active Dhaka fabric handloom ateliers, and savor authentic Palpali Newari feasts.

“Rani Mahal perched on the gorge cliff is breathtaking”
Tansen is so charming without the tourist hordes. The architecture of Rani Mahal right on the turquoise Kali Gandaki river was stunning, and our guide brought the tragic royal love story to life. Authentic Palpali food was a great surprise.
